AFLO XOXO: A PA-Led Model for Equity in Black Adolescent Health

Lisa Monroe, MCMsc, PA-C and her team at Baywell Health empowering adolescent girls of color in Oakland, California, with AFLO XOXO, a workshop series that focuses on body literacy, reproductive health, and self-advocacy skills.

The impetus for the program is rooted in Monroe’s clinical and personal experiences.

“I came to understand that the seeds of many health problems are planted early.  True prevention must begin in these formative years – shaping how girls understand their bodies, manage their emotions, and recognize their worth,” said Monroe.

Sessions will educate about reproductive cycles, STIs, pregnancy, contraception, and autonomy and consent.  Participants will have access to recorded content, virtual office hours, and community service activities.  Community partners will facilitate recruitment and connect participants with additional resources.

The workshops also provide a safe and affirming space and a bridge to clinical care, through Baywell Health, a federally qualified health center.

The program features an interprofessional team of African American women physicians, PAs, clinicians, and staff.  This intentional commitment to representation seeks to counter stigma, silence, and mistrust of the health system while providing relatable role models and mentors.

Pre- and post-surveys, evaluations, and referral tracking will measure program outcomes.

Monroe added, “By combining culturally affirming teaching, authentic representation, and organizational collaboration, AFLO XOXO offers an innovative, replicable model that equips adolescents with knowledge and advocacy skills, builds trust in health systems, and advances equity in sexual and reproductive health.”

This project extends the Health Foundation’s commitment to supporting innovative, PA-led interventions that foster prevention and patient education.

This project was supported by the nccPA Health Foundation EMPOWER Grant.
